August 11, 2023 · 15 cards

Starter Deck 8: Monkey.D.Luffy is a starter deck of the One Piece Card Game, identified by the code ST-08. It has been available in English since 11 August 2023. This ready-to-play 51-card deck is built around the black Leader Monkey D. Luffy. See below for the full card list and the average prices attached to it.

Nothing here is fixed: the page follows the official announcement schedule.

ST-08 is one of the two first character-themed starter decks, released the same day as ST-09 Yamato. Where earlier decks were built around a crew or a colour, these two are built around a single character.

Deck contents

The ST-08 deck comes with everything you need to play straight away:

  • 1 ready-to-play deck of 51 cards, including the Leader card, across 15 card types
  • 10 DON!! cards
  • 1 playsheet

The rarity breakdown is 1 Leader, 2 Super Rare and 12 Common. Every card, with rarity and average price, is catalogued on this page and kept current with the market.

Monkey D. Luffy as a black Leader

The ST-08 Leader is Monkey D. Luffy in black, an unusual pairing for the character. On your turn, every time a Character is K.O.'d, he takes a rested DON!! card.

Note the wording: a Character, not your opponent's. Trades in combat feed the Leader whichever side loses the Character, which rewards attacking into blocks rather than avoiding them.

The two Super Rares are Uta (ST08-002) and Shanks (ST08-005), a 10 000-power Character for a cost of 9. The pages linked here carry the full effect, cost and colour of each ST-08 card.

How it plays

ST-08 is an attrition deck. It wants Characters to die, because every K.O. converts into extra power for the Leader, and it uses black's cost reduction to make those trades happen on its own terms.

The tempo is slower than a red deck's but the deck rarely runs out of steam, since its resource engine runs on the same combat it is already fighting.

Who it is for

ST-08 suits a player who likes grinding boards down. It teaches a lesson that matters at every level of the game: losing a Character is not automatically a bad turn.

Experienced players return to it for the Shanks Super Rare, one of the strongest single cards in the early starter deck line.

Tournament legality

ST-08 cards are legal in official tournaments from the pre-release date in your region, subject to the official Bandai restriction list.

Collecting, rarity and market

The Shanks Super Rare drives most of the interest in ST-08, with the Uta Super Rare close behind. The Leader itself remains a recognisable card for the black Straw Hat archetype.

The values quoted card by card track the market. Three things weigh most: rarity, condition and demand.

Other printings

ST-08 is also printed in Japanese. It has never been printed in French: the French edition of the game began in February 2025 with the ST-15 to ST-20 decks.
